PAY IT FORWARD ZINE

Inspired by the 1964 and 2000 First Things First Manifestos, originally written by Ken Garland and signed by over 400 designers. The manifesto called out the mainstream capitalistic societal norms of the time and called on creatives to return to a more humanistic style.

Celebrating the rebellious and outspoken nature of the manifesto, I used spray-paint to create eye-catching backdrops to frame the text. My limited collection of spray paints worked in my favor to create a cohesive color palette, tying together each unique spread.

Spray Painted Sheets Scanned in to Create Unique Backdrops

The biggest challenge was making sure the legibility of the text wasn’t affected by the spray painted backgrounds. Minor edits in photoshop and many redo’s of the painting process itself accomplished this. While the pages originally began with solely free handed strokes and second-hand spray, I eventually became a bit more adventurous and used stencils and drips to create frames and headers.
